Back in the 1980s, it was a totally different story since the Internet wasn't as modernized yet. The instructors who appeared in such shows and videos gained so much popularity and they later were dubbed "fitness celebrities." Denise Austin
Denise Austin pursued gymnastics growing up and later earned a physical education degree from the California State University, Long Beach. She later became a "fitness celebrity" who had DVDs, classes, books, and columns that were all about helping people to get fit. She also used to be a part of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Austin has a daughter who has pursued a career as a fitness instructor as well.
Heather Locklear
Actress Heather Locklear was a very in-demand name in the Hollywood industry during the '80s and the '90s who is most remembered for the roles she had in shows like Dynasty, Melrose Place, and Spin City. Locklear had her own workout video back then called Your Personal Workout. These days, it seems like Locklear needs to focus on improving her overall lifestyle because she is reportedly struggling with her mental health and some vices. No matter, she still looks amazing and we really hope that she will be back on her feet soon!
Fabio Lanzoni
Fabio Lanzoni was every woman's dream guy back in the 1980s and 1990s because of all the romance novels he appeared in. He also appeared as himself in a number of movies and TV shows. Most of you remember Olivia Newton-John for the starring role she had in Grease. Aside from acting, she is also a successful singer and you might remember her song Let's Get Physical. The song was a huge hit and this actually turned her into a 1980s fitness icon. Well, why would she not, since her figure was absolutely stunning! Newton-John always stayed in the industry through the years but, unfortunately, she has been having a constant battle with breast cancer. We hope she's on her way to a full recovery!
Cher
Cher is another famous name who has been in the industry for decades already and people loved seeing her in the recent Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again movie. Back in the 1990s, Cher was all about promoting being in shape so she had her very own exercise book and videos. She still looks flawless as ever at her age of 72 and she just released a new album under the title Dancing Queen. She is also going on tour from September to October 2018. She keeps herself quite busy for her age and we can’t get enough of her!
John Travolta
If you have watched actor John Travolta in the movie, Grease, then you know that he can really bust a move. Back in the 1980s, he actually starred in a movie entitled Perfect with actress Jamie Lee Curtis. In the movie, you would see Travolta and Curtis in an aerobics class giving their all. While some of you might cringe watching it today, aerobics was a popular workout back then. Unfortunately, the movie got really bad reviews and it took Travolta four years before he appeared in a movie again.
Raquel Welch
Raquel Welch is a very successful actress who rose to fame back in the 1960s. In the 1980s, Welch had her very own line of weight loss books and videos called The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program. People loved all the diet and fitness tips she shared and she even featured a hatha yoga program. Raquel had such a stunning figure and lovely facial features, she is considered as one of the 100 hottest stars of the 20th century according to Playboy. Even if everything was successful, she never really continued promoting it in the following decades.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
When it comes to fitness, Arnold Schwarzenegger is another name who was known for it because he was into bodybuilding before he became a successful actor. Although, Arnold is very open about the fact that he used steroids back then when it was legal. He is known for winning the Mr. Olympia title for a total of seven times! His influence on the scene was so big that he later ended up having his very own bodybuilding competition which was called the Arnold Sports Festival. That was when before he went into politics.
Richard Simmons
Richard Simmons helped a lot of people shed some pounds back in the 1980s because he released a number of workout videos. The Sweatin' to the Oldies series was his very own collection of different aerobics videos that highlighted his high-energy moves. He is one of the few names that remained consistent through the years in promoting to a more active lifestyle. Sadly, he hasn't made any public appearance since 2014 so people are wondering what might have happened to him. We hope that he is just fine, taking his break from the limelight.
Jamie Lee Curtis
As we mentioned earlier, Jamie Lee Curtis starred alongside John Travolta in the film Perfect and their aerobics skills were highlighted in the movie. People saw her thrusting and gyrating on screen wearing a very tight pair of leotards that highlighted her amazing figure and as you can understand, they were all stunned by her toned figure. However, she never really continued her aerobics after she was done with the movie and she might have just stuck to staying fit through some simple diet plan and regular exercise. She is fit even now!
Kathy Smith
Back in the 1980s, Social Media wasn't a thing yet so people had to purchase hard copies of workout videos by a number of personalities. Kathy Smith was a personal trainer who released some of the most successful workout videos. She is known for being the woman behind Project: You! Type 2 which is a weight loss program designed for people who want to get their Type 2 diabetes under control. This was quite an innovative idea by Kathy and we definitely admire her for trying to make a difference.
Tony Little
Tony Little is remembered as being the guy who said some memorable lines in different infomercials. He is an established personal trainer who had a blonde ponytail as his trademark. You might not remember him by name but you certainly recalled who he is by the photo! He has had a very successful exercise book called the One on One with Tony Little: The Complete 28-Day Body Sculpting And Weight Loss Program. To this day, he still appears in some commercials. His wife is Melissa Hall and they have two sons together.
Cynthia Kereluk
Cynthia Kereluk is a fitness guru who most people remember for the Everyday Workout TV program. The show earned Cynthia so much money because it ran for over a decade. She also made some contributions to different fitness books and videos. She would also help people with their weight loss journeys through phone consultations and workshops. A fun fact that most of you might not have known about her is that she represented Canada back in the 1984 Miss Universe pageant. It does not come as a surprise of course since Cynthia used to be a stunner!
Jack LaLanne
Jack LaLanne is an expert in exercising and dieting who would also do some motivational speaking. Some people later dubbed him as the Godfather of Fitness. And we don’t blame them as Jack used to have a heavenly body. LaLanne was already popular even before Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda started helping people in their weight loss journeys. LaLanne was one of the first few who was able to put up gyms, release books, exercise equipment, and he had his very own fitness show on TV called The Jack LaLanne Show.
Angela Lansbury
Angela Lansbury is a notable actress who rose to fame back in the 1940s. Aside from appearing on screen, she also managed to become successful on Broadway. By the late 1980s, she had her very own workout video entitled Angela Lansbury’s Positive Moves: A Personal Plan for Fitness and Wellbeing at Any Age. Despite it being the only workout video she ever made, it still became a huge success. Lansbury is still very much alive today at her age of 92 years old. Greg Smithey
Greg Smithey helped a lot of people achieve some good "buns" back in the 1980s, thanks to his exercise video entitled The Original Buns of Steel. His videos were mostly focused on getting your body's lower half in shape and his work truly did wonders for his bank account because it sold around 1 million copies. It seems that Greg never skipped the leg day in his life! Despite all the success he got, this was his first and last video for he disappeared from the public's eye since then.
Billy Blanks
Billy Blanks introduced to people a new way of working out in the 1980s because he mixed boxing and taekwondo together. He later called the program Tae Bo and it became a huge hit. It is still popular even today! He was also successful in putting up his own gym and high-profile names like Paula Abdul were some of his clients. After his fitness facility became popular, he started releasing workout videos as well. These days, you can find his programs on his YouTube channel. So if you are up for the task, watch carefully!
Lou Ferrigno
Lou Ferrigno is known for bagging the IFBB Mr. America and IFBB Universe titles back then. Even with all the success in his bodybuilding career, Ferrigno still struggled financially. It was when he embarked on an acting career that he finally got some earnings that sustained him in life and that was quite a clever move. You may not have heard of it but he was cast as 'The Hulk' in the original The Incredible Hulk series back then. Ferrigno actually had a voice collaboration for The Hulk's voice in the Avengers movies.

Susan Powter made a very memorable weight loss infomercial back in the 1990s and people remembered her for her "Stop the Insanity!" catchphrase. She was a very talented woman because she was a personal trainer, nutritionist, author, and motivational speaker. She also had her very own talk show entitled The Susan Powter Show. The last time she made a TV appearance was when she was a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race back in 2011.
Diana Moran
Diana Moran was a very successful model back in the 1960s through 1970s. By the 1980s, she became recognized as a fitness guru after she appeared in Breakfast Time's exercise segment. Fans knew her for being the Green Goddess because of the green leotard she wore while working out. She later released a very successful book entitled Get Fit With The Green Goddess. She also has been raising breast cancer awareness ever since she was diagnosed with it back in the late 1980s.
Lizzie Webb
Lizzie Webb was referred to as Mad Lizzie because of her high energy. Webb was basically Diana Moran's rival for she had her own exercise segment on TV-am's Good Morning Britain. The Body Programme with Lizzie Webb was her very first workout video and it was a huge hit in the United Kingdom back in the 1980s. She later continued releasing videos while also releasing a number of exercise books.
Shirley MacLaine
Shirley MacLaine is an award-winning actress who is most known for the roles she had in Some Came Running, Terms of Endearment, and Ask Any Girl. Back in the late 1980s, MacLaine had an exercise video called Shirley MacLaine’s Inner Workout. The video was all about metaphysics and finding inner peace. She later continued sharing her knowledge about metaphysics by releasing books like Dancing in the Light and Out on a Limb that later became best-sellers.
Judi Sheppard Missett
Judi Sheppard Missett is the woman behind the program/company called Jazzercise. The program is not your typical workout because it combines resistance and strength training with some dancing. Judi was still studying at Northwestern University when she came up with the whole idea of the program. Judi still practices it to this day and the franchises of the company are estimated to be over 8K already. Jazzercise has been embedded into pop culture through the years.
Alyssa Milano
Because exercise videos were a hit in the 1980s and Alyssa Milano was a teen star during that time thanks to her role in Who's The Boss? it was really inevitable for her to have an exercise video of her own. Her video was named Teen Steam and was meant to be somewhat of a marketing ploy. This project must have shown Milano the importance of being in shape because she has really taken care of her figure through the years.
Charlene Prickett
Charlene Pickett was your typical fitness guru that rocked leotards and leg warmers. June Jones was a very successful fitness personality from Australia because she is one of the people who founded the fitness program, Aerobics Oz Style. The program ran for more than two decades and features instructors of different ages and genders. Through the years, Jones has still managed to maintain her slim figure despite reaching quite an old age. We're sure she has no plans of losing track of her healthy lifestyle.
Jacki Sorensen
Jacki Sorensen takes credit for being one of the pioneers of the aerobic dance trend. She was basically the one who thought of creating classes where people can do aerobic dance together. She became a huge mainstream hit in the 1980s because of her very popular exercise videos. She was also able to release a number of books about aerobics, health, and fitness. Today, her aerobic dance classes are still classics.
Bess Motta
Bess Motta is a very talented woman because she can dance, sing, and act. She has been a popular name in the aerobics scene back in the 1980s, thanks to her involvement in the program entitled, 20 Minute Workout. Despite the show's success and popularity, it ended up getting canceled after two seasons. Motta also earned money through acting for a while and had some minor roles in The Terminator, New Monkees, and The Home Show.
Tonya Harding
Tonya Harding was a very popular name from the figure skating scene back in the 1980s. She won a number of medals in her career and she was always known for her nice figure. Kerrigan is known for appearing on Dancing With The Stars, Broadway on Ice, and Champions on Ice.
Chris Evert Lloyd
Chris Evert was one of the best tennis players from back then. The championships she won in the singles division of the Grand Slam total to 18. She was able to serve as the Women's Tennis Association's President for about eleven years. She decided to enter retirement from playing back in 1989 when she was 34 years old. These days, she is an ESPN sports analyst and has her own tennis school.
Derrick Evans
Those who loved to watch GMTV back then will definitely remember Derrick Evans who is more popularly known as Mr. Motivator. He was known for his fitness segments that were aired live and was shown right before Power Rangers. He also wore spandex outfits that were very eye-catching and colorful. He was also able to release his own line of exercise books and videos. Evans is the man behind H'Evans Scent and PaintSplat.
Tracy Austin
Tracy Austin was very young when she dominated the tennis scene and she was only 29 years old when she earned a spot in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. She was able to win a number of championships at the Grand Slam and U.S. Open. She decided to say goodbye to professional tennis in 1994 after a car accident and some injuries that adversely affected how she played. She later pursued a career as a sports commentator. Austin is happily married and has three sons.
Karen Voight
Just looking at Karen Voight's toned muscles, you can already tell she is an expert when it comes to health and fitness. Voight released a number of workout videos and DVDs that all turned out to be successful. She trained some celebrity clients like Better Midler and Tina Turner. She was also able to release a book entitled Precision Training for Body & Mind. Back in the 1990s, she won awards like IDEA Businessperson of the Year and IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year.
Markie Post
Starting out as an actress in 1978, Markie Post ascended to fame playing Terri Michaels in the TV series The Fall Guy during the early 1980s. Later in her career, she was cast in several television shows and movies like Gangster Wars, Cook-Off!, Four Christmases and a Wedding, and Muffin Top: A Love Story, building her finances as she went along. Mary Lou Retton
At the 1984 Olympic games, Mary Lou Retton fast became America’s sweetheart. She melted hearts with her sweet demeanor and her superb gymnastics. It earned winnings scores and attracted more sponsors and investments in the sport. But apart from that, she made Americans happy and tear up with her cute 1985 fitness video for children. Aptly called Fun Fit, it was 'kid-perfect' exercise time and Retton was the ideal instructor.
Debbie Reynolds
Singing in the Rain Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds also got into the exercise video trend. She had long been a star by the time Do it Debbie’s Way came out. It was a spunky 1983 fitness video that included famous actresses from that time like Teri Garr and Florence Henderson. Reynolds, a favorite Hollywood star, acted in movies well into the 2010s. She was the mother of another Hollywood star, Carrie Fisher. Fisher and Reynolds died one day apart.
Sandahl Bergman
Sandahl Bergman won a Golden Globe Award for playing Valeria in 1982 on Conan the Barbarian. She was fit and mentally tough as she was able to do all her own stunts. LaReine Chabut is a well-known fitness expert who first started out as a model doing commercials, and eventually landed a contract with Nike. She often appears on the cover of magazines, including Shape, Glamour, and Health Magazine. She's a best-selling author of books that include topics like Lose That Baby Fat! Additionally, LaReine is the lead instructor for the exercise video series, The Firm, for losing weight and staying fit. They've sold more than three million copies to date. That's a lot of cash alright!
Chuck Norris
Martial arts expert Chuck Norris has been an inspiration to the public for a long time. He was an inspiration prior to his becoming famous for Walker Texas Ranger, and the resultant hyperbolic meme factoids. During the '80s, Norris was the lead celebrity of The Cannon Group conglomerate and a big earner for them. So much so that in the '90s, through his infomercials, he convinced people to buy his Total Gym to achieve amazing full body workouts.
Dolph Lundgren
Dolph Lundgren’s name might on it own make persons envision a tall, hard-bodied blonde. That wouldn't be far from the truth. This Swedish martial artist, actor, investor, and chemical engineering graduate to name a few, looks like he has done it all. And would you believe, this also includes a fitness video. But we feel that no matter what you do, you'll never attain his muscles displayed in Maximum Potential, his 1986 video. It's probably genetic. Lundgren still keeps up his bodybuilding and fitness routine. His high-intensity action flicks speak for themselves.
Hulk Hogan
Oh, you want the DVD, do you? That would be a little bit difficult since we mean the 1985 Hulk Hogan! Therefore, all we can give you is this fine audio cassette to listen to him continuously shouting what's meant to be demeaning workout commands military style. He's like an audio fitness trainer! How commercially successful was that? Anyway, it's designed to help you grow stronger and bigger with each command. And it's all done to synth music... yep.
Mr. T
OK, so he wasn't a perky, continuously hopping, spandex-wearing aerobics video instructor. But he was no fool - it was all an '80s thing. Mr. T. was an old school butt kicker, just like Sylvester Stallone and Hulk Hogan. He was pure '80s tough-man brawn and muscles with his huge biceps, gold chains, and the signature mohawk. Born Lawrence Tureaud, the Chicago native retired pro wrestler, retained his name, and it became a part of the popular culture. It showed up in advertisements under endorsements and film cameos. As the man said, he ain't no sucker!
Jennifer Beals
It was a tale of a young welder by day, exotic dancer by night, who finally achieves fame through dance. Jennifer Beals, the star of Flashdance became one of the defining individuals of the decade. The possibility of achieving physical health and fitness with beauty from dancing helped to define the decade. Today, Beals still has the body to hammer out the iconic dance to the tune of Maniac. She's still going at high intensity, with a high number of television and movie roles. This includes a part in the series, The L Word.
Mayim Bialik
Mayim Bialik started out as a child actress in the late '80s. She became popular playing the title character on Blossom but even had a role in the horror movie Pumpkinhead. Impressively, the forty-something actress also happens to be a neuroscientist and an author. She has written and published some books, one of which features over a hundred vegan recipes called Mayim's Vegan Table. It goes without saying that The Big Bang Theory star values good nutrition very much.

Lenny Kravitz looks so good that you could slap him on a poster for men's fitness and call it a done deal. He has maintained his incredible shape over time, crediting it to packing a jump rope for himself to use wherever he stays, so as to keep up with his exercise routine. He also says that he's an 'outdoor' person, and much prefers adventures outside to being in a gym, which, we think, is just practical. He started acting in the late '80s, when he played a doctor as the title character in Doogie Howser, M.D. A playwright in his hometown of New Mexico discovered him at a drama camp. Now, the actor is most recognized for his role of Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, which he played from 2005 until 2014.

Her view of activities to stay fit is a far cry from the norm, and certainly different from that of other instructors of the 1980s. Maybe they were just a quick way of earning money. Electra created a routine called Aerobic Striptease as a means of getting fitter and hotter.
Sylvester Stallone
Rocky Balboa still lives on in our dreams. Who could forget him? It's the same with Rambo who complained that "They drew first blood." You would remember Stallone playing either character, granting him wealth and a super-ripped bodybuilder physique that is able to rip up any shirt with just one flex of his muscles.
