The best of the best of Hollywood actors have given us some marvelous performances. We're talking about celebrities like Will Smith, Halle Berry, and Adam Sandler. But though they do amazing things with their skills and make amazingly huge salaries that stun, sometimes, they tank, and sometimes it's for years. At times, they even do things in their career that make you go "Huh?." Sure, we love them. Sure we appreciate them, and when they do really well, we celebrate them. And when they go in the opposite direction, we're going to point it out, too. So let's see who among our fave celebs bombed.
Mike Myers
When actor Mike Myers won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor of the Decade in 2010, it wasn't a particularly proud moment. He'd won a Golden Raspberry in various years previously, but not for a ten-year span. This is an actor who has known box office successes and the accompanying private jet lifestyle for movies such as the Austin Powers series, and the Wayne's World movies. He's even won a Primetime Emmy Award. However, Myers continued acting and went on to become a director, debuting in 2013 with Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. In 2018, he was cast in the films Bohemian Rhapsody, and Terminal.
Pauly Shore
Comedy actor Pauly Shore got his big break as an MTV VJ in 1989. He even got his own show Totally Pauly, in which he hosted MTV spring break parties. In 1992, he got another big break and successfully landed a starring role on Encino Man. Following this, he also did Bio-Dome, and Son in Law, films he became most popular for. He made a lot of money, but these days, we're not sure what's up with Paul, because he keeps doing films in which he plays himself, like the 2018 movie, Alone Together. It's as if he can't get regular movie roles anymore...
Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen is one of Hollywood's award-winning actors on both the big and small screens. He was once the star of TV's Two and a Half Men and was the actor receiving the biggest pay in 2010 with $1.8 million for each episode. Then there were reports of domestic violence and substance dependence and alcoholism on his part. In 2011, his contract with the show was canceled due to unpleasant comments he made about Chuck Lorre, the show's creator. On top of this, in 2015, he announced he was HIV positive. He still gets work, however, and in 2017, he was cast in the movie 9/11.
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy burst onto the scene in 1983 starring in the hit movie, 48 Hrs. He then had a good run of films that did very well at the box office, like Trading Places and the Beverly Hills Cop series. He got some critical acclaim for his acting skills over the years and has won the People's Choice and Image Awards, among others. However, another award that he's been winning is the Golden Raspberry, given for poor performance. In 2010, Murphy won this award for the worst actor of the decade - something that any actor wouldn't want in his portfolio. He was cast in the film Mr. Church in 2016.
Adam Sandler
This comedian and actor brought a fresh kind of comedy during the 1990s along the likes of Pauly Shore. He became quite popular and starred in humorous films like The Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, and doing voice-acting for the Hotel Transylvania series. And sure, he also has luxury cars, fancy houses, and a celebrity lifestyle. However, a number of his projects like Jack and Jill hadn't been well received and were given strong criticism. Sandler, as a result, has won three Raspberry Awards, and been nominated for that award eleven times. Undaunted, however, he still does films, and stars in the crime comedy-drama Uncut Gems in 2019.
Nicolas Cage
Once upon a time, Nicolas Cage was looked upon as being among Tinsel Town's actors receiving the biggest pay. In 2009, Forbes reported that he had earnings of $40 million. Cage had acquired a lot of lavish toys during the 2000s and spent millions. He purchased 22 luxury vehicles in 2007, and by then, owned eleven mansions internationally. However, the IRS came calling in 2009, with a claim of over $6M in unpaid tax obligations since 2002. This resulted in Cage losing a number of his homes and other assets, and taking on any movie he could get to pay off his debts. The year 2018 saw him on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Rob Schneider
Here's a comedian who has been a little controversial. Rob Schneider, who's also a director and screenwriter, has a reputation for sending people into fits of laughter during his stand-up acts. He's also known for being cast in movies like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. One of his involvements as an activist has been to oppose vaccination of children, which he believes is a danger and causes autism. Schneider used to be a State Farm Insurance spokesperson. However, in 2014, his contract with them had ended due to his controversial views that apparently had no scientific evidence. His 'opinions' haven't affected his acting jobs, though. In 2017, he was seen in the movie Sandy Wexler.
Mel Gibson
This celebrity is no stranger to us as an actor and is most famous as Max Rockatansky in the action post-apocalyptic set of movies, Mad Max. In 2006, he was arrested for a DUI, during which he had said several controversial things to the arresting officer. The statements were exposed in a Vanity Fair article in 2011 and resulted in him being blacklisted in Hollywood for almost ten years. But Allison Hope Weiner, a journalist, and actor Robert Downey Jr. mediated on his behalf for forgiveness. After being nominated for an Academy Award in 2016 for Hacksaw Ridge, agencies and actors showed eagerness to do productions with him once more.
John Travolta
It's well established that movie producer, and actor John Travolta is a world-famous celebrity. Since the days of his acting debut on the TV show, Welcome Back, Kotter in 1975, he's done slews of movies such as Broken Arrow, and The Taking of Pelham 123. Since 1991, he's been married to actress Kelly Preston. However, since 2012, various men have begun accusing Travolta of indecent assault. He's had to pony up cash for his lawyers to fight the lawsuits they filed against him. Travolta denies every claim. He received his first Primetime Emmy Award in 2016 for production work done on American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.
Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Oscar Award in 1997 for the movie As Good As It Gets. Following this, he had great films like Snow Dogs in 2002. But then starting in '99, he also appeared in a string of movies that had negative reviews and all but one, Norbit, didn't score big earnings commercially. Coupled with this, he passed over films that became hits. He starred in some independent films but neither these nor the successful movies he did previously could turn things around. Now, most of his movies go straight to DVD. In 2018, the film Bayou Caviar starred Gooding, who also co-wrote and directed it.
David Schwimmer
The popular television comedy Friends that ran from 1994 to 2004 made actor David Schwimmer mega-famous. During this period, he had various choice acting roles in other productions and earned large sums of cash in the bank. However, he hasn't been able to replicate the magic of the show that made his name almost virtually on every pair of lips. Apart from movies for television, he's made only guest appearances in TV series. He does have a role in a new film called The Laundromat, the due date for which is to be announced.
Shannen Doherty
Actress Shannen Doherty earned herself the reputation of being a legendary bad girl in Hollywood in the '90s era. It started while working on Beverly Hills, 90210 when she kept displaying poor or inappropriate behavior on the set, such as constantly being very late and uncooperative. From 1992 to 1994, the media was filled with stories of claims of fighting between Doherty and her co-workers. This reputation marred her public image for years; she's never top-billed in another TV series since (she had projects but with minor roles only). In 2015, Doherty revealed that she had breast cancer but happily for her, by 2017, it was in remission.
Meg Ryan
Film producer an actress Meg Ryan, had her breakthrough part in the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally... Other hits followed like You've Got Mail, and she became one of Hollywood's darlings. Fifteen years later, her films had gross earnings of over $870M globally. But from 2000 to 2009, her career became marked by a set of nominations for awards for being the worst. In 2000, she was included in the Worst Onscreen Group nomination, while in 2004, it was in the Worst Fake Accent and Worst Actress categories. Meg didn't fall into depression and stopped going on though. Her latest film was in 2016 - Ithaca - in which she played Mrs. Kate Macauley.
Halle Berry
Actress Halle Berry was a 2002 Academy Award winner for the movie, Monster's Ball. Berry is also into modeling and has represented beauty product brand Revlon. She also entered various beauty pageants before showbiz. In 1986, she placed sixth in the Miss World Pageant. Berry, unfortunately, became an item in the news when she failed to remain at the scene of a traffic accident she was involved in. She entered a 'no contest' plea to a misdemeanor charge. It didn't affect her career though. She's now a producer and is also the Executive producer for the new television sitcom Boomerang, which premiered in February 2019.
Steve Guttenberg
The film Police Academy was a runaway hit in 1984, and actor Steven Guttenberg was one of the comedians starring in it. His career has spanned forty years and it's been a mixed bag of successes and failures. Guttenberg played a supporting role also in the movie High Spirits in '88 but that production tanked. Cocoon: The Return and Don't Tell Her It's Me, the movies which followed, also didn't do well. This wasn't the end of his film career, of course, because he did Three Men and a Baby and its sequel, and both were successful. Guttenberg began dating reporter Emily Smith in 2014. He made her his bride in January 2019.
Richard Gere
Award-winning actor Richard Gere's first movie role in 1977 was one where he supported the lead actor on Looking for Mr. Goodbar. One of the high points of his career (aside from Pretty Woman), was acting in the musical Chicago in 2002. For playing Billy Flynn, he won a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award. Gere has seriously been an activist for various international social causes for years. He has touched on subjects that haven't exactly made others comfortable or agree with him. Since early 2018, he's been married to Alejandra Silva, who is a Spanish activist. They had a baby son in early 2019.
Demi Moore
Nineteen-ninety-six was an excellent one for already successful actress Demi Moore when her paycheck was $12.5M to star in the film, Striptease. No actress starring in a movie had ever received such an amount before. The film was a commercial success but the critics didn't like it. In '97, she proved her acting mettle by shaving her head and starring in G.I. Jane, which also did well commercially. But then for some reason, Demi's career took a pause and was followed by a plunge that lasted a long time. Fortunately, she went on to have other good roles like on Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, while in 2019, she appeared on Corporate Animals.
Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner won two Academy Awards for Dances With Wolves in 1990. But then we come to 1995 and Costner both co-produced and starred in Waterworld. This movie was the costliest ever created then, and it disappointed at the box office in a major way. Costner saw a noteworthy plunge in his career. He tried again in '97 in The Postman, but it also disappointed and his leading man status went with it, which might have been bad for his well-being. But since 2013, he's seeing some success in supporting roles in films, like in Molly's Game in 2017. He also received an Ensemble Performance Award for Hidden Figures in 2016.
Julia Roberts
Have you ever seen someone so successful that all you feel is envy? Well, not that it makes sense to envy her, but when it comes to films, actress Julia Roberts has the Midas touch. She achieved star status in Hollywood after starring in Pretty Woman in 1990. It made a gross of $464M globally. She owns a trio of Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award for her 2000 movie Erin Brockovich. Altogether, her movies like Ocean's Eleven, and Wonder released in 2017, have made $2.8 billion at the box office. So no anxiety medication is required here because when it comes to earning revenue, she's among the highest achieving actresses.
Goldie Hawn
Actress, producer, and singer Goldie Hawn first became well-known on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, an NBC program that premiered in 1968. She was a Golden Globe and an Academy Award winner for the 1969 movie, Cactus Flower. In her later acting years, we've seen her in the 1996 movie The Out-of-Towners and the 2002 movie The Banger Sisters. After this latter film, Hawn took a fifteen-year break from acting and seemed to be in retirement but her status said 'active.' Then, she briefly came back to do Snatched which was released in 2017. Time will tell if this is the last we'll see of her on the screen.
Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone has earned a lot of respect as an actor, producer, screenwriter, and director. When in 2000 he played the starring role in Get Carter, it didn't work out well for him because audiences and the critics didn't like the movie. His succeeding films, including, Avenging Angelo and D-Tox, failed both commercially and critically. But Stallone found reprieve with the blockbuster 2003 full movie, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, however, he wasn't out of the woods as yet. But with Rocky Balboa in 20o6, the sixth movie in the Rocky franchise, he scored commercial and critical success once more. In 2019, we'll see him on Rambo V: Last Blood.
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore became famous on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. After doing several films during the '80s, she went through a rebellious phase during the 1990s (alcohol and substances became her friends, too). It was evidenced in the media by her daring activities and roles she began taking. She'd play a bad girl like on Poison Ivy, which became well-demanded on cable and video, but failed at the box office. Happily, for Drew, she came out on the other end of the rebellious phase in one piece by the late '90s. The movie Scream in '96 earned $173M globally and great reviews. In 2019, she's a judge on the TV program, The World's Best.
Lindsay Lohan
Actress Lindsay Lohan started modeling as a child under Ford Models. Then a big break came for her to act in The Parent Trap, the 1998 Disney movie. The movie did well and Lohan was cast in Freaky Friday, released in 2003. Lohan went through a wild phase. During the 2000s, she was known for partying hard and drinking. It frequently interfered with her ability to work, led to at least two DUI records, and resulted in her being labeled "not bankable." But she eventually went to rehabilitation and straightened out. On the Cyclades Islands in 2018, she opened a couple of Lohan Beach Houses.
Jim Carrey
Canadian-American Jim Carrey has been popular for his vibrant slapstick type of acting. Who could forget Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994, or The Truman Show in 1998? He has even won a Golden Globe Award for Man On The Moon. Carrey has had numerous hit movies but has taken a break from acting. As of 2017, he's been exhibiting cartoons that he drew. Some are even considered controversial. Additionally, he opened a show at Los Angeles' Maccarone Gallery in 2018. It's called IndigNation and showcases 108 ink-and-pen sketches that Carrey did since 2016 and uploaded to his Twitter account, thus capitalizing on technology.
Will Smith
Will Smith is a famous movie star now, but he used to be a famous rapper known as The Fresh Prince. His first hit song, Girls Ain't Nothing but Trouble was released in 1985/1986. He received his first Grammy Award for Parents Just Don't Understand in 1989. However, in 1988 and 1989, Smith didn't fully pay his income taxes and was too liberal with his cash. The IRS informed him that he owed them $2.8M, then took a chunk of his income and seized a number of his assets. In 1990, while trying to still recover, he was offered the show The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Smith stars in the 2019 movie, Gemini Man.
Helen Hunt
Helen Hunt started earning fame and seriously building her portfolio after co-starring in the popular '90s sitcom, Mad About You. The show lasted on the air for seven years, yielding several awards for her, including three Golden Globes. After acting in several movies, Hunt debuted as a director in 2007 with the movie, Then She Found Me. She's since done the 2014 movie Ride and TV shows like American Housewife. It's uncertain why, but despite being often nominated and winning awards, Hunt's last award mention was a Critics Choice Award nomination in 2013 as an actress. She is set to appear on I See You, an upcoming thriller movie in 2019.
Keanu Reeves
Canadian actor Keanu Reeves is the other half of the duo of actors who found fame starring in the blockbuster Bill and Ted comedy film series. This was but one of his hit movies. Others were Speed and Bram Stoker's Dracula. In 2010, Keanu had a meme of him created on the Internet, after camera photos of him sitting on a bench in the park alone and seeming sad got around the Net. It led to June 15 being declared by a Facebook fan on their page as 'Cheer-up Keanu Day.' At least, he has his own day. In 2018, he was cast in the movie, Destination Wedding.
David Spade
Funnyman David Spade is a terrific actor. He became popular as a Saturday Night Live cast member during the '90s. This allowed him to have a vibrant acting career on both TV shows and movies. We've enjoyed his performances in films like Tommy Boy and the Grown Ups movies. The Spade text abbreviation online is named for David Spade, whose sarcastic comedy style is well known. It's a Spade emoticon that's used in text messages, for example, on your mobile as a way to convey sarcasm. It's believed to have first been used in early 2018. Spade portrayed Wayne in the movie, Father of the Year, in 2018.
Renée Zellweger
After movie producer and actress Renée Zellweger turned up in 2014 at the 21st Women in Hollywood Awards organized yearly by Elle magazine, the comments started flying. There was a buzz that people could barely recognize her, so she must have done some kind of plastic surgery. Zellweger took it in stride, pointing that if she looked different, she'd expect it because she was older after all. The three-time Golden Globe awardee seemed unfazed by it all. Zellweger undertook the task of portraying the iconic actress Judy Garland in an upcoming musical/biopic - Judy.
Steven Seagal
In movies, actor Steven Seagal is a martial artist hero battling the bad guys outside of the courts, to free their victims from tyranny. We're talking about films like Above the Law, his first movie from 1988, and Under Siege in which he was Casey Ryback. Things looked good for Seagal when he started his movie career, but beginning in 1996 and going to 2018, various women have complained about indecent behavior or indecent assault allegedly by him. It has tarnished his good-guy persona and caused a downturn in his popularity. He's still making movies though, and in 2019, we'll see him on Under Siege 3 in the same role as before.
